About Me

Over the years I’ve developed an intimate understanding of writing and editing from the author’s and editor’s perspectives. The knowledge and experience I’ve acquired give me a great platform from which to help fiction writers with their manuscripts.

I work with debut novelists, bestselling writers (I’ve edited the fiction of Catherine Ryan Hyde and J. A. Konrath, for example) and everyone in between. I copy-edit for both independent writers and publishing houses, and I offer authors who are self-publishing the same high standard of editing that publishing houses demand from me. I specialize in thrillers, crime fiction, horror, urban fantasy, science fiction and historical fiction.

I started copy editing in 1990, when I became the subeditor of Record Mirror, a music magazine based in London. (Subeditors do the same work on magazines and newspapers as copy editors on book manuscripts.) I went on to be a subeditor for many well-known magazines and newspapers in the UK, among them the Times, Mail on Sunday, Esquire and Empire, and I won a publishing award for my subediting on Loaded.

During my 20 years as a journalist, I was also an editor, deputy editor, production editor and chief subeditor. I had a parallel career as a writer, too, working as a feature writer, film critic, contributor to men’s magazines and travel journalist. After a three-year break from editing, which I spent working as an English teacher, I returned to it in 2012, becoming a fiction copy editor.

My career as an author began in 2000 when I started writing what was to become The Last Wrestlers: A Far-Flung Journey in Search of a Manly Art, a work of memoir, sports writing and travel writing based on journeys I made to India, Mongolia, Nigeria, Brazil and Australia to uncover the roots and significance of real wrestling. The book was published by Ebury Press (Random House) in 2007. Literary Review described The Last Wrestlers as ‘accomplished, fresh, passionate, genuinely exciting and entertaining’. I’m currently working on a crime novel set in Rio de Janeiro, where I lived for two years.
